Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program

NIHB

Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) is a federal health benefits program that provides coverage for eligible First Nations and Inuit clients who are registered (have a status number) or recognized under the program. Counselling and mental health services may be covered when provided by an approved provider.

Do I qualify for NIHB?

We are not able to determine eligibility, but NIHB eligibility is generally based on your status and registration with the program. We can help you with the process of pre-approval, but NIHB ultimately determines whether a person is eligible for coverage.

Do I have to pay?

If you are approved by the program, counselling services are billed directly to the NIHB, so you will not pay out of pocket.

How many sessions are available?

20 sessions per calendar year.

Additional information we may need to ask or collect:

1. Is the counselling for an adult or a child/youth?

2. Are you seeking services for yourself or for someone you are supporting?

3. Are you currently covered by NIHB?

4. Are you looking for individual, couples, family, or child/youth counselling?

5. Have you been referred by another provider or agency? If yes, ask who referred you. If you are switching providers, you will need to call NIHB before we can proceed with anything.
